Spirited Away is one of my most favorite animated movies which is a 2001 fantasy film directed by Hayao Miyazaki. This is the first film from Studio Ghibli I had ever seen, when I was only 10 years old. To be honest, at that time I was too young to understand every metaphorical detail and meaning behind it. All I knew is that the way they built the characters and told the story terrified and surprised me a lot. It left a huge impression on me so after a long time, I rewatch it again and again.

I guess everyone has already known its whole story, so I won’t go into details. Instead of that, I will analyze the most impressive scenes to me: No-Face in the bathhouse (from 1:08:20 to 1:36:00) So sorry that this scene is quite long so I was only able to find a very short cut of this scene on YouTube :

The scene starts off with a view of the bathhouse at midnight, when there’s no customer as well as worker here. However, No-Face appeared and inveigled the frog with gold pieces in order to gobble up it. After that, No-Face became the wealthiest customer there. As a “youkai”, he could produce a lot of gold to blind the staff. Of course, all the workers of that bathhouse were bursting with joy because they got a lot of money when they pleased No Face with the best and most delicious things and services. However, nothing was enough. Then there was no more delicious food, No Face switched to eating...bathhouse staff. Because in the sense of giving so much money like that, No Face must be provided everything he needs. We can hear the music played more intensely when No Face became mad and was chasing up Chihiro.

This scene represents the meaning that director want to convey: if people behave greedily, selfishly, and badly, they will have to pay dearly. In the imagined life of animation, rapacious people will be eaten or become disgusting animals while in real life, you will definitely not be turned into a pig. Instead of that, you will lose your humanity, value, respect, and personality. In contrast, if people live nicely and kindly, we will have a happy life. More than that, we can learn from each other, and each of us can be a model that other people can follow.

It's been a while since I saw Spirited Away, and I don't remember it all, but greed and/or materialism is really a powerful theme in the movie -- starting from how extravagant the bathhouse and its owner are, Chihiro's parents, forced labor by erasing identity... it's quite a movie!
