Visiting art exhibitions at the museums and galleries became one of my new hobbies since I moved to Tampere. In my hometown, Vietnam, there’re also exhibitions that exhibit the artworks of local artists, of course, but they’re organized only on a small scale and not as frequently as those in Tampere.
Now I have more chances to enhance my knowledge about traditional art as well as get to know more talented international artists so, why not? Let me introduce you to some of the art exhibitions that I’ve visited and really impressed with!
1. Magnus Enckell
Location: Tampere Art Museum
Time: Until Jan 30th 2022
Entrance fee: 5e for student
Description: The painter Magnus Enckell (1870–1925) is known especially as a representative of Finnish symbolism. The exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of the work of one of the most significant names of the golden age of Finnish art, and presents him as a multifaceted cultural influencer.
This was the very first time I visited an art museum in Tampere and I was so impressed by the way his paintings and artworks were presented chronologically, which helps the audience to easily get the main themes as well as how his art style changed per year in his life. I especially love the radiant but dreamy color palette in his portrait paintings.
2. Kaleidoscopers
Location and time: Galleria Himmelblau
Time: Until Nov 28th 2021
Entrance fee: Free!!!!!
Description: Degree show of TAMK Fine Art Students
In this exhibition, every artist introduces a topic that deeply touches them such as online shaming, social media, homelessness, adaptation to urban spaces, teenage years and emotions, loss of wilderness... The Kaleidoscopers 2021 exhibition isn’t only exhibiting the images of the artworks, but each student also has their own virtual room with an atmosphere and ambiance related to their 3D artworks. All of the artworks are very fascinating which tell various stories and carry heavy meanings.
3. Tonight We Dance
Location: Sara Hildénin Art Museum
Time: Until Jan 23rd 2022
Entrance fee: 5e for student
Description: Tonight We Dance, a solo exhibition of works by Marcel Dzama, originally from Canada and now living and working in New York, presents works on the theme of dance that reflect his powerful subconscious world.
Honestly, I found it a little bit difficult to identify the main idea and important themes that Marcel Dzama want to convey. However, this is the biggest and most impressive art exhibition I’ve ever visited. Through his mixed-media works, dance and the stage are important subjects for him. In his works, dance is connected with carnival and celebration but also with destruction and death. In addition to dance, references to chess are utilized frequently as a metaphor for the eternal repetitive nature of the war. The stage is also often a field of battle, and a game of chess can resemble a dance. Also, I saw various mediums of his displayed artwork, such as drawings, paintings, collages, videos, sculptures, and installations.
I’ve seen nearly 10 exhibitions in Tampere but these are my top 3 favorite art exhibitions. After each visit, I realized the efforts the artists had to put behind their work, learned the way they convey meanings through their pieces of art, and have a deep thought about the stories they told.
If you have time, don’t hesitate to come and see those exhibitions! To me, it’s one of the best ways to reflect, heal my soul, and recharge energy
after a long hard-working week.

It's really cool that you've been able to find so many exhibitions in Tampere specifically! I also like the fact that all of these are so different from each other, both in execution and theme. Hopefully you'll continue to discover new art and artists that you like here. :)
